In the beginning of the year I decided in my head that this would be the year I really thrived. But three months in, I was still finding myself in the same routine and doing the same thing. I hadn’t done anything to change. So over the past three months I have slowly been implementing routines into my life that I have wanted for so long but have never stuck to. This time around I wasn’t giving myself a choice. I was going to either stick to the changes I wanted to see or remove them from my list completely.

Step One

I started setting my alarm one hour earlier. I had been terrible about not waking up until Addison came into our room and woke us in the morning. It didn’t start the day off on the right foot because from the minute I stepped out of bed, I immediately felt behind. Since waking up an hour before the kids do, I get to have a little of my own quiet time before the day really starts.

Step Two

I have wanted to learn more about meditating for a long time. I downloaded both the Headspace and 10% Happier meditation apps and have slowly begun incorporating a five minute meditation into my day.

Step Three

I pulled out one of the many blank notebooks I have lying in a drawer and opened it to the first page. “Gratitude Journal” I wrote on the first page. That was almost a month ago and I’ve made it a habit to write five things I’m grateful for every single day. I absolutely love this habit I’ve stuck to and I can’t wait to look at my gratitude journals in the future.

Step Four

Try a new time. I’ve never been really good about sticking to a face wash/moisturizing routine at night. But when I stopped and looked at my issue with this I realized that I would wait until right before bed to take off my makeup and wash/moisturize my face. By that time I was so tired and not interested in anything besides my head hitting the pillow. So now whenever I put the kids to bed, I go right to the bathroom and take all my makeup off and do my whole nighttime routine so I don’t have to think about it later in the evening.

Step Five

Add it to your to-do list. I live really far away from my grandma and she’s the only one I have left. When I lived near her I wasn’t very good about calling or visiting her since she was right there. Now that she isn’t conveniently twenty minutes away, every week I write “call grandma” on my to-do list and every week I look forward to our fifteen minute check-in conversations. It makes her so happy to hear about how the girls are doing and I love hearing what she’s up to since I don’t get to spend as much face time with her.

Step Six

Repeat, repeat, repeat. I cannot tell you how much these small things have all added up to make such a difference in my life. It just reaffirms how much if you are consistent in whatever you want, whether it’s taking care of your skin or your soul or anything else, you will see a difference.

    I love those meditation apps you mentioned! It helps me so much at this point in my (probably highly distracted!) life to have something (an app, a guided meditation online) lead me through it. I also super love waking up before my toddler – it feels like a good, calm start to my day when I have some time to myself before I have to talk to anyone or start being a mom ๐Ÿ™‚

    I am so desperately trying to wake up before my toddler for that alone time (with coffee), but I’m struggling to do it. Thanks for the motivation!! I’ll keep trying.

    Awesome post. Sounds a lot like what I currently do for my morning rituals. I too waited until my oldest came in the room to wake up and even then I would offer her a space in my bed so I could get a few more minutes. I started waking up earlier to have time to myself but I find my kids are out of the room as soon as they hear me make noise. So much for that idea!

    I have four kids and two of them have autism. Consistency is the only way we survive life. I think itโ€™s super important. I think I might start adding some meditation too.
