Every year around this season, I get the uninspired feeling when it comes to getting dressed. The weather is in the middle of shifting but not quite at the consistently warm stage yet and everything new I introduce to my closet just kind of hangs there (pun intended!) going untouched or thrown on with very little effort or thought. I wanted to get more excited about my wardrobe so this month I did a capsule wardrobe from March 15-April 15. I picked out thirty-four pieces to wear and literally put a beach towel over the rest of my racks of clothes so I wouldn’t get distracted!
It became exciting and fun to put my outfits together when I first started it and I kept waiting for the moment I would get tired of the pieces I picked out. The funny thing is it never happened! I never got tired of mixing and matching pieces. I carefully chose the things I would use for my capsule wardrobe and made sure they were versatile and some of my favorites.
A few rules I put in place for myself in order for this to work:
- Workout clothes don’t count but I’m only allowed to wear them to the gym. No putting them on at 7am and not working out until noon anymore and if I did wear them home instead of changing at the gym, I had to change into normal clothes right away.
- I didn’t limit the accessories or shoes. I think this is why I had so much fun with playing with my clothes and creating outfits.
- I purposely didn’t include leggings because I have enough jeans that were comfortable and I would still be wearing workout leggings a few times a week so leggings were off limits in my everyday wardrobe.
- Think outside the box. Some of these outfits I never would have put together but when I pushed myself to think outside the box, I came up with some fun ones!
I wanted to share this post sooner but I was afraid I wouldn’t follow through with the capsule wardrobe month. Now that it’s coming to a close I thought I would share the pieces I included in case you ever want to try a capsule wardrobe of your own!
A lot of the tops were my basics but I added in a couple others I hadn’t worn in a while like that NASA shirt and the yellow floral print top. I am noticing how important a basic collection for my wardrobe is especially when it comes to capsule wardrobes. It’s easy to play around with layering when everything has a similar feel.
Sweaters/Long Sleeve Shirts
The weather lately has been so back and forth with being so warm and so cold. It makes me all about the layering with sweaters! In the first picture, all but one of those sweater on top are open cardigans that I almost always start off with in the morning and by noon, I’ve shed a layer.
I thought about only adding in very few pants and just mixing up the tops more but I really like the versatility that pants can bring so I added a couple more than I probably normally would. I also included my Easter dress which unfortunately only got one use out of but I knew that going into it. Next time though I would probably use a dress that I can wear for numerous things instead of just one specific day.
