Every year around this season, I get the uninspired feeling when it comes to getting dressed. The weather is in the middle of shifting but not quite at the consistently warm stage yet and everything new I introduce to my closet just kind of hangs there (pun intended!) going untouched or thrown on with very little effort or thought. I wanted to get more excited about my wardrobe so this month I did a capsule wardrobe from March 15-April 15. I picked out thirty-four pieces to wear and literally put a beach towel over the rest of my racks of clothes so I wouldn’t get distracted!

It became exciting and fun to put my outfits together when I first started it and I kept waiting for the moment I would get tired of the pieces I picked out. The funny thing is it never happened! I never got tired of mixing and matching pieces. I carefully chose the things I would use for my capsule wardrobe and made sure they were versatile and some of my favorites.

A few rules I put in place for myself in order for this to work:

  • Workout clothes don’t count but I’m only allowed to wear them to the gym. No putting them on at 7am and not working out until noon anymore and if I did wear them home instead of changing at the gym, I had to change into normal clothes right away.
  • I didn’t limit the accessories or shoes. I think this is why I had so much fun with playing with my clothes and creating outfits.
  • I purposely didn’t include leggings because I have enough jeans that were comfortable and I would still be wearing workout leggings a few times a week so leggings were off limits in my everyday wardrobe.
  • Think outside the box. Some of these outfits I never would have put together but when I pushed myself to think outside the box, I came up with some fun ones!

I wanted to share this post sooner but I was afraid I wouldn’t follow through with the capsule wardrobe month. Now that it’s coming to a close I thought I would share the pieces I included in case you ever want to try a capsule wardrobe of your own!

A lot of the tops were my basics but I added in a couple others I hadn’t worn in a while like that NASA shirt and the yellow floral print top. I am noticing how important a basic collection for my wardrobe is especially when it comes to capsule wardrobes. It’s easy to play around with layering when everything has a similar feel.

NASA Tee // A New Day Graphic Tee // LOFT Signature Soft Tee // A New Day White Tee

Old Navy Relaxed Chambray Shirt // AE Soft & Sexy Henley Snap Front // Endless Rose Boho Blouse (old) // BP Twist Hem Tee // Long Sleeve Slub Crew Neck (old)

LOFT Floral Striped Tee (no longer available online) // White Button Tank (old) // Caslon Peplum Tee // AE Lace Tank // Old Navy Twill Field Jacket

Sweaters/Long Sleeve Shirts

The weather lately has been so back and forth with being so warm and so cold. It makes me all about the layering with sweaters! In the first picture, all but one of those sweater on top are open cardigans that I almost always start off with in the morning and by noon, I’ve shed a layer.

Green Sweater (old)// Old Navy Tan Cardigan // White & Gray Striped Cardigan (old) // Anthropologie Mustard Sweater (old) // A&F Gray Cardigan

LOFT Floral Embroidered Striped Bell Sleeve Tee // Universal Thread Long Sleeve Buttoned Down // Sunday Sweatshirt (old) // Who What Wear Tied Long Sleeve Blouse // Lauren Conrad Gray Sweater

I thought about only adding in very few pants and just mixing up the tops more but I really like the versatility that pants can bring so I added a couple more than I probably normally would. I also included my Easter dress which unfortunately only got one use out of but I knew that going into it. Next time though I would probably use a dress that I can wear for numerous things instead of just one specific day.

Ted Baker Dress // H&M Jeans (old) // Old Navy Floral Skirt (old but similar here and here) // Cat & Jack Overalls (old but these are similar)

A New Day Black Pants // Articles of Society Distressed Jeans // Earl White Distressed Jeans (old but these are similarLOFT Striped Pants (old but these are similar) // Levi’s Distressed Jeans // Madewell Jeans

This is inspiring me!! The problem (well its not really a problem) is that I have lost 50 lbs and am still losing weight so my wardrobe is weird right now as in a lot is too big on me but I don’t want to buy a bunch of stuff till I reach my goal…so I guess I’m going for the baggy look during this Spring season! When I’m at goal weight I’m going to have so much fun putting together cute outfits like you have pictured!!

Good for you! That does make building a wardrobe a little difficult right now but you’re still in the middle stages and once you’ve reached your goal you can reward yourself with an awesome new wardrobe! That’s so amazing!

Your outfit selections are darling. I couldn’t be more ready for spring. These give options to keep warm on those chilly days…which I’m afraid are going to hang around a bit longer in Missouri!

I’m so ready for spring too. This winter/spring has been so weird everywhere, even down here in Alabama it’s 70 degrees one day and 35 the next. I’m sure everyone is ready for consistent warmth!

What a fun idea! I’m often uninspired by what’s going on in my closet and it only takes a bit of effort to stoke those fires again. It’s so easy to get stuck in a rut, so doing it this way forces you to see your pieces in different ways. I love it, thanks for sharing!

I’m so glad you liked it! Hopefully it’s inspired you to wear your current closet pieces in different ways!

I love your capsule! I’m so glad the 30 days is working out for you!! I have been trying to evaluate the items in my wardrobe a little more closely. I like your idea of just choosing within your closet (and hiding the rest).

I swear if I didn’t hide the rest, I would be so tempted to wear all the rest of my clothes! It’s most definitely helped the process 🙂

I never thought about doing a wardrobe capsule. You got some great pieces in your capsule.
